The most effective technique is, arguably, Holding/Rage Reduction. Using this method, an adult provokes the child to anger and then comforts him and reinforces their relationship. One of the leading arguments against this type of treatment is the possible confusion it can cause for the child since he is both provoked and comforted by the same adult.
In spite of this, Holding/Rage Reduction remains the leading treatment for this disorder. There are some milder forms of treatment, which involve scheduled sessions for practicing eye contact, “snuggling” and other activities that reinforce strong relationships.
