What is Asperger's Disorder?

Asperger's disorder is part of a category of child development disorders that show symptoms very early.  By definition, these disorders are very similar, so to be diagnosed with Asperger's, the child must not meet the criteria for other disorders such as schizophrenia or pervasive development disorder (PDD).
Asperger's disorder is characterized by difficulties with daily social functioning.  These difficulties are shown by repetitive and stereotyped/copied behaviors.  The child also tends to be gifted in certain areas.  There are no delays in language, brain and thought development, self-help skills, behavior that allows the patient to adapt to situations (other than social) or curiosity about the environment.
Quick Facts
  • The percentage of children affected (prevalence) by Asperger's is .1% - .26%.  It is associated with less severe problems in development (similar to a milder form of autism).

  • The first sign of symptoms generally appear around preschool age.
