What is Ageism?

We’ve all heard it a million times before – “not now dear, you’re too young,” or “wait until you’re older.”  Sometimes it seems like everybody expects you to act a certain way – namely, immaturely – just because you can’t see a rated R movie or you don’t have your license.  Being told you’re too young is never fun.  But age discrimination goes both ways.

Quick Facts
  • You must be at least fourteen years old to work.

Many times older adults face the same sorts of stereotypes – they are assumed to be grouchy or senile or lonely just because they aren’t as young as they used to be.  In a culture obsessed with youth and ageless beauty, it’s no wonder that being “old” can be seen in such a negative light.  But just because the view is there does not mean it’s right.  Just as it’s hard for a young person to be told he or she will act a certain way because of youthful foolishness, an older person being told that he or she will act a certain way because of age is just as hurtful.

      Ageism:
Ageism refers to discrimination shown towards others based on age.  While ageism can in fact refer to any age group, it is often a term used to describe discriminationagainst older adults.

      Reverse-ageism:
Keeping in mind that “ageism” is generally seen the as negative perception or stereotyping of older people, reverse-ageism refers to discrimination towards younger people and youth.
