How Do I Overcome My Poor Body Image?
Don’t be fooled—anyone can have a poor body image, male or female, young or old, famous or not. There are a few simple things that you can do day by day to help get over your poor body image and learn to love your body.
  • Love your body. You only get one, and it’s up to you to keep it healthy. When you feel healthy, you feel happy. As soon as you are comfortable with your body, it shows. People notice when you are more confident.
  • There is no one type of body that is beautiful. People of all different shapes and sizes are considered beautiful.
  • What’s on the inside counts too. Someone who is attractive on the outside could be ugly on the inside, and that shows too.
Remember that the models you see on TV and in magazines aren’t real. They have been airbrushed, have personal chefs, trainers and stylists to help them look the way they do.
  • Spend less time in front of the mirror, especially if they make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable.
  • If you feel the urge to compare your body to someone else’s, think of three reasons why it is ridiculous for you to think that your life will be ‘better’ if you had that body. Repeat them every time you want to compare yourself to someone else.
  • Exercise because you want to, because you like the feeling you get after you’ve finished a hard workout, or because you want to be healthy. Don’t exercise to lose weight or to make up for extra calories you’ve eaten.
  • Participate in activities you enjoy that may call attention to your body, like dancing and swimming. You have every right to do things that you like to do, no matter what your size or weight is.
  • Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable. Don’t wear clothes that you don’t like simply because you think they hide your body.
  • Think of five good qualities that you have, like being smart, nice, or funny.  Repeat these to yourself whenever you start to feel bad about your body.
  • Take people seriously, and enjoy their company for who they are, not what they look like.
  • Surround yourself with people and things that make you feel good about yourself and your capabilities. When you are around things that make you happy, you’re less likely to base how you feel about yourself solely on appearance.
  • Treat your body with respect, kindness, and listen to its needs. You only get one, and it will help you achieve your dreams!
  • Scenario
Your friend Kevin, who is a bit heavier than most of the boys in your grade, comes to you during lunch one day and he seems really upset.
