You aren’t exactly into the same kind of music that your parents are into. Yeah, technically they both fall under the same category of “ROCK” or “ALTERNATIVE”… but they don’t really have the same feel. This scene from “Clueless” sums it up perfectly:
TRAVIS: I had an insight, Mr. Hall. MR HALL: I'm all ears. TRAVIS: OK, like, the way I feel about the Rolling Stones is the way my kids are going to feel about Nine Inch Nails, so I really shouldn't torment my Mom anymore, huh? MR HALL: Yes. Well, it's a little off the subject, but tolerance is always a good lesson, even when it comes out of nowhere.
You can’t agree on everything, but since rock and alternative music means something to both of you…you can try to understand what the appeal is.

If you noticed some overlaps, it’s not your eyes playing tricks on you…there are some bands that have made it to the top of everyone’s list. Also, the things that rock and alternative music stand for remain the same. Try to understand when your parents question your music choices. Remind them that their parents questioned their taste.
