Rock & Alternative

It is said that, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” This saying also applies to music. One man’s rock is another man’s obnoxiously loud noise. Replace the first ‘man’ with your generation and the second ‘man’ with your parent’s generation. You have now hit upon the cause of many misunderstandings and arguments that kids have with their parents; choice of music.

You aren’t exactly into the same kind of music that your parents are into.  Yeah, technically they both fall under the same category of “ROCK” or “ALTERNATIVE”… but they don’t really have the same feel.  This scene from “Clueless” sums it up perfectly:

TRAVIS: I had an insight, Mr. Hall.
MR HALL: I'm all ears.
TRAVIS: OK, like, the way I feel about the Rolling Stones is the way my kids are going to feel about Nine Inch Nails, so I really shouldn't torment my Mom anymore, huh?
MR HALL: Yes. Well, it's a little off the subject, but tolerance is always a good lesson, even when it comes out of nowhere.

You can’t agree on everything, but since rock and alternative music means something to both of you…you can try to understand what the appeal is.

When your parents think ROCK/ALTERNATIVE…

  • Fleetwood Mac
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Doobie Brothers
  • Pink Floyd
  • Joni Mitchell
  • The Doors
  • The Who
  • Grateful Dead
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Woodstock
  • Freedom of Speech
  • Revolution
  • Experimentation
  • Rebellion
  • Anti-war Protest

When you think ROCK/ALTERNATIVE…

  • Incubus
  • Foo Fighters
  • Ani DiFranco
  • Metallica
  • Pearl Jam
  • Blink 182
  • Tori Amos
  • Nirvana
  • Linkin Park
  • Papa Roach
  • Korn
  • Smashing Pumpkins
  • Deftones
  • Stone Temple Pilots
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Sum 41
  • Avril Lavigne
  • Aerosmith (they still rock)
  • U2 (for the same reason)
  • Puddle of Mudd
  • Rebellion
  • Revolution
  • Experimentation
  • Freedom of Speech

If you noticed some overlaps, it’s not your eyes playing tricks on you…there are some bands that have made it to the top of everyone’s list. Also, the things that rock and alternative music stand for remain the same. Try to understand when your parents question your music choices. Remind them that their parents questioned their taste.
