Have you ever heard a song played and afterward thought, "Wow that was weird. What was that?" You have most likely just heard alternative music. Although you may not be aware of it, for as long as there has been pop music, there has been the alternative genre. Its mission: to break away from the pop scene in any and every way possible.
Alternative music is a very exciting genre, because you never know exactly what you are getting into. There are many artists who get classified as alternative, who take their music to various new levels of creativity. Some artists use instruments that are somewhat uncommon, some use drum beats that can't be used on the dance floor, while others focus on sounds and effects that you'd never hear in pop songs. Alternative artists often have only one thing in common with each other: they all offer something different to the music world.
It's true that most alternative artists write music that isn't widely accepted by every audience, resulting in less album sales and a smaller fan base. Such is the price for being different, but being different isn't a bad thing! While pop artists are forced to produce songs that must sound a certain way, alternative artists are free to write however and whatever they wish. With this freedom of creativity, artists are able to push the music industry into new directions, resulting in the creation of new genres. Since the artists refuse to give in to the instant money and success pop music has to offer, we can see how they stand behind their own individual goals, a rare quality in the entertainment industry.
Alternative music is not for everyone. If you are used to your music sounding a certain way, you may not enjoy the occasional awkward noises and styles that alternative has to offer. But if you feel daring and adventurous enough to step off the beaten path of the music industry, give alternative a try.
