Today, we recognize folk music as the popular style of folk music that came out of the United States, although the term 'folk music' can be applied to the different styles of music pertaining to specific cultures all over the world. Just like historical folklore and mythology, folk music is known mainly for one thing: telling a story.

Sometimes, folk songs use as their subjects the actual folk stories and nursery rhymes passed down through generations and simply put them into song. Other times, however, folk songs consist of religious hymnals or even simple work songs. So what does this mean? It just means that folk music doesn't need to follow a challenging musical tradition and is not merely limited to people who actually have talent. Instead, it is a type of music that an entire community can participate in.

Rather than being all about musical quality, folk music is more concerned with getting their message across. Folk songs have focused on many themes, from life stories to religious beliefs to political corruption and peace. Plenty of popular folk artists put a heavy emphasis on the importance of a song's lyrics and fall somewhat short of holding any musical skill.

But this doesn't mean that there are no talented folk musicians out there. In fact, as folk music merged with more popular styles of music, many talented folk musicians soon became well-known for their skillful musical playing, their talented voice, and beautiful lyrics. Many popular artists have been influenced by these popular folk musicians and use their sense of ingenuity and talent in their own music.

If you're a fan of most any kind of music, you may want to give folk music a try. You may recognize in it some influential elements that also are a part of your favorite musical style. Try not to judge too harshly on the possible lack of technicality in its performance. Instead realize the story being told, and try to figure out what it means and how it reflects the cultures that we live in.
