This one time at Band Camp. . .
Are you a musician? Do you sing or play an instrument and want to showcase your talent? School bands are a great way to learn more about playing your instrument, meet other musicians like yourself, and get to perform for your friends and family.
Maybe you~{!/~}re thinking, ~{!0~}No way, school bands don~{!/~}t do the music I like to play.~{!1~} Well, it~{!/~}s true that the music played isn~{!/~}t as exciting as rock, rap or other popular music, but that doesn~{!/~}t mean that you won~{!/~}t get anything from being in the school band. Ask just about any famous musicians or singers out there today, and most likely they~{!/~}ll reply that they were in their school's band.
Another great thing about school bands is that for most bands, you don't have to be a great player to join. Some lessons may be required beforehand, but usually you can join most school bands after you've been playing only a short time. Of course, many schools also have advanced groups which do require auditions because they are made up of the best of the best.
So what else is good about being in the band? Well, first off, you're going to find a number of other students that play instruments, and most of them starting off at the same learning point as you. Band is a great way to make friends and to learn about music as a group. Who knows, maybe some of them are interested in starting a band, or you'll want them to join your band.
If you love playing music, the school band is another chance to do what you enjoy often. Depending upon your school, you might find a number of different musical groups that give different performances, from playing at football games, to sit down concerts, or maybe participating in competitions.
Although you may not normally listen to the music played by the school bands, as a musician you could learn to appreciate the many types of music play and improve the overall knowledge you can share with other music lovers.
