Keep the kids busy: Babysitting for a long period of time could be dreadful, especially if the kids do not have very many things to do or they get bored of them fast. You need to think of things to do on the spot. For example: play tag, hide and seek, cards, take a walk, play a sport, watch or rent a movie, play video games, make up a dance, do a skit, or build a tent. You can also make something to eat like cookies or even a meal if they are hungry.
If you have a license, and have permission, you can take the kids out, for example: take them for ice cream, out to eat, roller-skating, to the park, or even on errands. You would be surprised how many kids just love the freedom of getting out of their house without their parents. Babysitting takes a lot of energy because you need to keep the kids occupied. Make sure you give them your full attention.
Be strict but not too strict: You do not want the kids to hate you, but you don’t want them to take you for granted either. You should not yell at the kids, but instead make sure to let them know if they do something wrong. If a child gets really bad you can send them to their room, or give them a timeout in a corner. You don’t want the kids to be out-of-control or to dislike you. Believe me, the parents will thank you later.
Get the kids to like you: The first day of babysitting is always hard. You never know what to do or say. The best thing is to be extremely nice to the children and just talk to them about simple things. Ask them what their interests are, what grade they are in or anything about school. If you babysit during the school year, help them with their homework. You can bring them toys and treats but make sure you don’t do it every time; they will get used to it and before you know it, you will be broke.
Ask the Parents: It is always good to have something planned. Asking a parent what their child is interested in is a good idea. Setting guidelines is also important. 'No dessert until you eat all of your dinner,' 'No doing a child’s homework for them.'
Last but not least, HAVE FUN!
