They Happen to the Best of Us

We all get stuck in embarrassing situations. The worst part of being caught in an embarrassing situation is the reaction you get from other people. If nobody laughed, pointed, or came up with taunting nicknames in honor of the mishap, you might walk away feeling less humiliated.

Farted in class?  Said something completely stupid to you crush?  Got your period the day you wore your new white pants?  Had a hard-on in sex ed class?  Pick your favorite.  Everyone, and I do mean everyone, gets caught in an embarrassing moment at least once in their life (and for some people it seems like once a day).  No matter what people say, we’ve all been in situations where we wished we had never gotten out of bed that morning.

For some, it’s not a big deal.  They just shrug it off and move on.  For others, it’s the end of the world.  In these moments, people easily forget that we are all human, that we all make mistakes and that embarrassing things happen to everyone. Kids can be cruel, but most onlookers won’t find the situation nearly as bad as you do. You’ve probably had to talk your friend off a ledge after he or she accidentally burped in front of her crush, or got a huge zit in the middle of his or her forehead. You don’t think it’s half as bad as your friend is making it out to be – then something happens to you and suddenly it’s an end of the world event.

It’s all about perception.  What you have to remember is to laugh it off, forget about it, or make a joke.  If you act like it doesn’t bother you, then people won’t have anything to say.  Why would anyone bother to make fun of you for something that doesn’t bother you?  It’s a waste of time for them.  So when you feel like running and hiding forever, just shake it off and force a laugh at yourself.  If you can make light of the situation, other people will too.

Which situation would be your worst nightmare?
Your crush overhearing you gush over him or her
Your younger sibling revealing secrets from your diary or journal
Having someone walk in the stall while you are sitting on the toilette
Letting one rip in class or a movie theater when it just got quiet
Having mom or dad show at a party and angrily escort you out
None of the above, something far worse!
All of the above
