What Is ADD/ADHD?

ADD/ADHD involves chemicals in the brain, that are not working properly.  Because of this, it is generally considered a ‘neuro-biological disorder’. However, sufferers normally show more symptoms in behavior.

ADHD is characterized by the inability to stay focused, impulsive behavior, and sometimes hyperactivity. The symptoms of hyperactivity are usually detected by age seven. However, inattention may not be visible until later stages of development (elementary school age). All of the symptoms interfere with a child’s learning, school adjustment, and social relationships.

There are different types of ADHD (based on the latest diagnostic criteria/DSM-IV):

1.  ADHD combined type: characterized by a combination of impulsive, hyperactive, inattentive, and distractible behaviors

2.  ADHD inattentive/distractible type: characterized by inattentive and distractible behaviors

3.  ADHD impulsive/hyperactive type: characterized by impulsive and hyperactive behaviors

    Quick Facts
  1. About 2-3 times more boys than girls are affected

  2. Children with ADHD are 10 times more likely to drop out of high school

  3. 16% of ADHD children reported pressure from fellow students to sell or give them their Ritalin medication.
