The most famous joke made at a stutterer's expense has to be the scene in Billy Madison when a young boy in Billy Madison's class is struggling through a section that he is reading aloud from his book. Billy Madison, played by Adam Sandler, interrupts the painful stuttering to say, "T…T…TODAY, junior!" Everyone gets a good laugh out of that one, but for some people it hits a little too close to home.
People who have a speech impediment not only tend to have a more difficult time learning, but they also have to suffer through the years when kids are the most cruel with unavoidable ammo for some jerk who likes to pick on everyone. A speech impediment is difficult to ignore, but often fairly easy to treat. Many people have them and those who have had them, and gotten treated, have gone on to do amazing things.
Take Bruce Willis for example. He is a really famous actor, making serious bank on anything from action to drama films and he has a speech impediment. It is something that you would never notice because he has gone through speech therapy and practices his lines until he is comfortable with them.
If you or someone that you know has a speech impediment, you can get past it too. Don't be embarrassed because you are not alone. Just think of it as something that puts you in great company. People, like Bruce Willis, who overcome their obstacles, achieve much more than anyone who wastes time making fun of people with learning disabilities.
