Dyscalculia is a learning disability which effects how a person is able to visually read numbers, organize data, understand sequences and memorize information. It is similar to the problems that dyslexic students have with reading and writing. Unlike dyslexia, though, very little is understood about dyscalculia. As of now there is no definitive test or evaluation process to determine if a student has dyscalculia.
There is an unfair attitude floating around that some people just don’t have a head for math and therefore they just won’t get it. The truth is that everyone should be able to succeed at the basics of math. Sure when you get up to calculus and physics, there will always be some people more adept at it than others, but the foundations of arithmetic, geometry, algebra- these are concepts that everyone can learn. When someone has a learning disability like dyscalculia, it is often misunderstood or left untreated.
If you find yourself getting really frustrated with math and maybe having problems with things that other students barely even think about- it may be that you have a learning disability. There’s no reason to suffer in silence. If you do have a learning disability it does NOT mean you’re stupid- it means your brain works in a different way and there are tools you can use to overcome it. As soon as you get those tools, you will be able to let go of the frustration and embarrassment that has been holding you back.
Dyscalculia is a mysterious little disorder, but one which really does cause distress and frustration among many youngsters. If you’re worried- go ask for help.
