Ok, so that might be the cheesiest slogan you have ever heard, but reading is a basic necessity and (when used correctly) it can be fun. So why are people taking less and less of an interest in it? Well, maybe it doesn’t seem cool to your friends, maybe you get enough of that reading stuff in school, or maybe you just aren’t comfortable enough in your schools. Whatever your reason is, get ready for a change!

Reading a lot is hot!! It can help make you more popular, for one thing. So you’re thinking, whatever. But really, did you know that researchers figure that teens use thousands of words a day? Most of the time those words are just about social stuff and personal stuff and relationships. The more comfortable you are with words, the easier it is to express yourself. Not only are other kids going to be attracted to you, you’re going to feel better about yourself.
Building your vocabulary isn’t as hard as you think. Here are some easy ways to pick up some new vocab, vary words, feel better about reading, and improve your chances of scoring with that girl or guy you’ve had a crush on.
Reading is a skill like playing goalie in soccer or sax in the jazz band. To get good at it, you have to practice. Even if it’s only for 15 minutes a day, the more you practice reading, the easier it’ll get. And it doesn’t always have to be a book. Reading ESPN Magazine or Teen Vogue is a great way to improve your vocabulary. Good computer software can also reinforce your vocabulary and improve your reading skills. Right this minute, you’re on the “read to succeed” fast track by logging on to WARM2Kids. Even reading all the lyrics on the new CD you just bought will make you a stronger reader. Don’t think of reading as a bore. Think of it like an hour spent at the mall. You’re there to pick up some great stuff, look good, feel good, and impress your friends. Reading can do all that and more! It doesn’t cost you anything if you go to a library and you never outgrow its power!
