Prom Night Preparation

Ask your crush to the “Big” Dance:
A lot of girls and guys in high school have a dream date for the prom.  You have to take the chance and go for it.  Yes, of course, you are going to be nervous and not want to ask that person but you never know until you try.  Practice before you actually ask that person.  Talk to your friends or talk to a mirror.  Hey! It may sound corny but it's better to know what you are going to say and memorize it because you will definitely be stressed when you are looking that hottie in the face.

You can ask in person, on the phone, through an instant message or email – it takes more guts to ask in person, but it will definitely seem more sincere.  The worst your crush can do is say ‘no’.  If he or she says no then maybe you are better off either going by yourself or with a really good friend.  Don’t get discouraged.  It looks much cooler to show up anyway and not let him or her know that you couldn’t imagine prom without him or her as a date. Why go with someone if they don’t want to go with you?

Plan a hot after party:
You want to plan a party at someone’s house that has all the essentials: a TV, a great stereo, a big enough house for all of the people coming, enough food/refreshments and whatever else you need to make your party successful.  Let’s get right down to the big concerns.  Often, the after-party will have alcohol.  The best advice is to stay away from all that and have a “dry party”.  But, more realistically, just be safe and mature about your decisions.  First of all, be honest with your parents.  Tell them where you will be and what is going on there.  This way, they will know that you are going to be as responsible as possible and will be there if you need them at any point during the night.  Second, prom is a very big night not only for you but also for cops.  The police will be out and more alert, making sure that everyone is driving safely.  You should not take a chance, what you should take are the keys.  Planning the best after prom party is also planning the safest.

HOT TIP: have your friends make party music mixes ahead of time.
CHEAP TIP: instead of having one person provide all of the food and refreshments, ask each person to bring something

Find the perfect dress:
You want to find a dress that no one else will have on prom night.  Your best bet is to go to specialty stores or stores that have a list and will not sell the same dress twice.  You want to find the perfect color, size, and length.  Look through magazines or online for dresses or ideas that will guide your shopping trips.  Prom dress shopping takes time and patience, so it is best to go early and on a day when you have plenty of time.  Make sure you go to many different stores and give yourself many options.  If you want to get really complicated, have a fitting (or have a friend take measurements) before your official dress search begins.  Hey! This is your night not anyone else’s.

Prom Purse Essentials:

  • Makeup refreshers like mascara, lip gloss and a tiny tube of concealer
  • Hanky or small pack of tissues
  • Clear nail polish (if you are wearing nylons)
  • A safety pin
  • Money
  • Cell phone or a card with important numbers
  • Mouth spray, gum or mints
  • Elegance…oh wait, how did that get in there?

Tux Pocket Essentials:

  • Small pack of tissues
  • Mouth spray, gum or mints
  • Chapstick
  • Money
  • Manners…oh wait, how did those get in there?

Learn How to Dance:
This is where WARM2K has to intervene.  If you don’t have rhythm, then don’t try to do complicated dances.  If your harlem shake looks like a monkey having convulsions, then please hold yourself back.  Dancing should be fun and should not injure you, your date or anyone else who has the unfortunate luck of being around when you start flailing!  Don’t worry; you can learn how to dance.  YES YOU!  There are plenty of instructional videos or books to read that you can find at your local stores.  The best advice though is to tape some MTV videos or just put on some music and GET DOWN!  Sure, you would be scamming moves off of other people, but if they are on TV there is probably a reason.  Just be certain that you are copying the right material.  Don’t copy from shows that are on too late at night or from anything that has cartoons and puppets – BE SELECTIVE!

Know the Top 10 Things Not to Say to Your Date:

1. Wow, you are really taking a fashion risk with that!
2. Do you mind if my friend and I switch dates?
3. You for prom queen?  Get serious!
4. Wait, the prom is tonight?!?!
5. Too bad your friend wasn’t available, but you’re the next best thing.
6. Oh hey, there’s my boyfriend/girlfriend.
7. Do I look fat in this? (Seriously girls, there is no right answer to this so stop asking!)
8. Sorry I’m late…we’ll definitely make the last 15 minutes
9. I could have sworn I got a limo for tonight
10. What’s your name again?
