Divorce: Hard To Deal

Your parents are asking a lot when they expect you to understand divorce and readjust to a new lifestyle.  Coping with these changes can be difficult and most people, even adults, may not have the experience to deal with something like divorce.

Hard as it was to go through your parents’ divorce, there are some things you can do to make life easier for yourself, and for your parents. Which of the following have you tried already? Have you let them know?

  1. You need both of them to stay involved in your life.
  2. You want them to talk nicely to each other even when it’s hard to find kind words to say.
  3. You don’t want to be put in the middle of their arguments, or be their ‘messenger’ at times they’re not talking to each other.
  4. You want them to let you e-mail, and talk on the telephone with the ‘other’ parent as much as you want to.
  5. You need to spend ‘private time’ with each one of them.
  6. You don’t want to be ‘grilled’ about the ‘other’ parent, who he or she is seeing, or what he or she doing.
  7. You’re happy for them, but it isn’t always easy for you.
  8. YOU WANT THEM TO BE HAPPY and you’ll try in every way to help.

Even though divorce has made it impossible for your family to ever be the same again, you still have two parents who love you and want to be with you. Try to accept the new life they’ve chosen and invite them to stay in yours.

Remember ‘You’re Not Alone’…almost 50% of marriages in America end in divorce, adding up to over 20 million divorced adults. More than 3,000 children and teens a day see their parents’ marriage end in divorce and 40% of the kids in America live without their father.

"My wife of 20-some years filed for divorce in 1995.  I've had some real setbacks and blows.  But I've found through the years that you grow from them; it's through the tough times that you do the most advancing."
