What is Appendicitis?
The appendix is a small pouch on the right side of the abdomen at the beginning of the colon.  It is generally useless and can be ignored if no problems occur.  However, it can cause huge medical issues if it becomes irritated.
Quick Facts
7% of people in the United States are diagnosed with appendicitis in their lifetime.

Appendicitis is the swelling of the small pouch (appendix). Most often, this disease affects people who are 8-25 years of age. Males are almost 1.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with appendicitis than women are. If swelling occurs, it is important to remove your appendix before it breaks (ruptures). If the appendix is not removed before it ruptures, then the infection will spread and there will be a greater risk of serious complications.

Some complications that you may experience are:

  • Breaking up of the intestines
  • Tissue death of the intestines
  • A localized collection of pus (abscess)
  • Peritonitis.

It is important to get medical help as soon as you have any pains in that area.
