Acne

Everybody knows that ‘zits’ are GROSS, it seems like they ruin your life.

They always pop out just when you have a big dance to go to or a new guy (or girl) you’re into. Your Mom tells you no one will even notice. Shows how much she knows! Your little brother comes down for breakfast, looks at your face, and yells, “GROSS!”

If you’re a girl with zits, you’re lucky. You can just run upstairs and put some concealer makeup on to cover it up. If you’re a guy, you just have to let it show.

Whoever you are, here’s the real deal about zits, pimples and acne. You’re just like everyone else.  Almost all teenagers go through periods where their skin breaks out.

Don’t let anyone tell you it’s your fault because of all those potato chips and Snickers bars you’ve been pigging out on. Zits or acne are not caused by greasy foods or chocolate.  Overactive oil glands in your skin cause the breaking out.

The oil glands we’re talking about usually start acting up when you’re going through puberty. That’s the time when your hormones are raging through a state of change. While there’s little you can do to prevent acne completely, there are things you can do to lessen the breakouts.

  • Wash your face once or twice a day with a mild soap. Don’t go overboard. Washing too much can irritate your skin and dry it out. Sometimes, use of a gentle cleansing scrub twice a week can help get rid of bacteria buildup and prevent future breakouts.
  • Always wash your face after you’ve built up a sweat exercising because sweat can clog your pores
  • Try to change your sheets and pillowcase weekly.
  • Don’t pop or squeeze the pimple, even though you would like to. Sure it may look better after the gook oozes out (EWWW!!!) but squeezing and popping your skin will very likely cause more redness, swelling, infection, or even leave a permanent scar.
    • If your acne is bad and doesn’t seem to go away, see a doctor or a dermatologist who will be able to give you the right medicine for acne.
