Ecstasy: A Serious Feeling
Ecstasy gives a feeling of relaxation and carelessness. It only takes about 20 minutes to become active in your system.  Because it affects the body quickly and lasts for a long amount of time, it has become very popular at dances and raves.

Ecstasy is an organic material also known as ‘E’, ‘X’, the love drug and MDMA.  It is in the drug family ‘entactogen’ and is taken in tablet form, each containing about 100-125 mg.  In other words, this drug is ingested and affects you internally. The effect of the drug is at its peak appoximately one hour after it is taken and begins to wear off after three to five hours.  Intense feelings of understanding, emotional warmth, and self-acceptance are normal under its influence.  Though ecstasy is not physically addictive, some people become dependent on it to control their emotions and escape real life problems.

Ecstasy works in three phases:

1. Coming up  (users will most likely feel a rush)
2. The Plateau (users will feel relaxed)
3. Coming down  (users will feel exhausted, depressed, and irritable)

Quick Facts
  • Ecstasy on the black market – It can be much stronger and contain (be laced with) other drugs

  • Ecstasy as therapy – Ecstasy was made illegal in 1985, but before that it was being used in Spain as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder

  • Ecstasy as a gateway drug – The effect of ecstasy decreases when it is taken often, this leads the user to seek stronger ‘highs’ from stronger drugs

  • Ecstasy is on the rise – In three studied grade levels, 8th, 10th and 12th, ecstasy use has risen over the past two years and by the time America's youth enters the 12th grade 11% have been under the influence of ecstasy effects.
