ADD or ADHD occurs when a person’s central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) does not properly absorb the neurotransmitter dopamine. Neurotransmitters work by sending messages from the brain to the body and vice versa. When there isn’t enough dopamine in the brain, a person cannot focus as well as they should. Ritalin acts as a stimulant that allows the right amount of the chemical to enter and be absorbed by the brain.
Who should be using Ritalin?
Due to the nature of the chemical dopamine, a person who takes Ritalin may develop a dependency – that is, they may continue to take the drug even when they don’t need it for medical reasons. Ritalin is a drug that stimulates the central nervous system. When taken properly, it mildly stimulates the brain, allowing for better focus. However, if the drug is overused or ingested incorrectly, a person may develop an addiction. The drug acts as an "upper," with similar effects of “speed” and other amphetamines. This addiction is similar to a cocaine addiction – both cause extreme highs due to stimulation of the central nervous system and both are potentially deadly.
Common Ritalin side effects... Headaches Increased heart rate Increased blood pressure Loss of appetite Nervousness Inability to fall or stay asleep Addiction if excessive doses are used over a long period of time
Over the past ten years, Ritalin has become one of the most popular “designer drugs” used by suburban teens. You Decide for Yourself…but make sure you get the facts and information first! Knowledge is power.
