One answer lies in the possibility that smoking has become an endless cycle.
Just a few decades ago the dangers of cigarettes were not fully understood and it was more socially acceptable to smoke. For those who started smoking back then it can be very hard to quit. Those who began smoking before they were 18 have a much harder time quitting than those who started in adulthood, which may explain why your parents still smoke despite all of the health risks – though it certainly does not excuse the habit.
The idea that smoking is “cool”, “rebellious”, or “glamorous” is now a big part of Western culture. Despite the information now available, Hollywood still cranks out films where main heroes and heroines are puffing away. The images of cigarette smoking being tough and sexy are hard to wipe away now that they have become such a big part of mainstream culture.
Unfortunately these factors seem to outweigh the medical facts in popular perception. More people are becoming smokers everyday.
However, new programs across the country may begin to unravel this trend. More and more cities are banning cigarette smoking from restaurants and other public venues. So far, the results have been good but putting a stop to the spread of the smoking habit can really only occur on an individual basis. Get informed, stay healthy and kick the habit. If your friends or parents smoke, share this information and be a role model to them. You only get one body.
