Symptoms of HIV and AIDS
People with HIV or AIDS often have few, if any, visible symptoms and oftentimes these symptoms look like they are from a different illness, like the flu.  Some of the symptoms include:

Some of the symptoms for people with HIV are:

  • Diarrhea
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Swollen lymph nodes in neck, groin, or under the arms
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in vision
  • Rash
  • Fever, chills, or sweating, especially at night
  • Frequent pneumonias
  • Shortness of breath
  • Any other flu-like symptom, such as headaches and dry cough
  • Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids

Some of the symptoms for people with AIDS are:

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Seizures or poor coordination skills
  • Difficulty or painful swallowing
  • Fever
  • Coma
  • Severe headaches
  • Vision loss
  • Mental symptoms, such as confusion and forgetfulness

Think someone you know may be infected with HIV or AIDS? Remember that people who are infected show very few symptoms. It is important that they get tested for HIV if they have not already, and you can offer your help and support to them. Keeping the person in mind, read over the following symptoms and check those that apply:
Has unprotected sex
Has sex with multiple partners
Uses drugs that involve needle injections
Is often tired and has a little, if any, energy
Has lost a lot of weight without any explanation
Feels nauseous or vomits a lot
Is abnormally hot or cold
Gets the chills or cold sweats a lot
