Common Causes of Acne:

  • Genetics – parent had acne as a child
  • Hormones – androgen hormone activate during adolescence and trigger oil glands
  • Stress – does not cause pimples but can make them worse
  • Diet – a food allergy may contribute to outbreaks
  • Washing face too frequently – aggravates the skin
  • Greasy/oily skin products i.e. cosmetics, lotions, cleansers – clog oil ducts.
  • Dirty cosmetic tools – a blush brush or foundation sponge can spread bacteria
  • Medications – pimples can be a side effect of certain medications i.e. barbiturates, steroids and seizure medicine

 Symptoms of Oily Skin:

  • Pores clogged
  • Oil visible in T Zone causing it to look shiny
  • Skin feels greasy to the touch
  • Makeup wears off shortly after it is applied
  • Prone to pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads

Acne occurs in adults when there is a hormonal change. Going through pregnancy, menopause, menstruation, or when the androgen hormone is produced in abundance are such causes. Hair removal and ingredients in certain cosmetic products can trigger acne as well.

1.  Acne Scars – pimples that become inflamed cannot heal properly. Susceptibility is dependent on heredity or skin color. Scarring is an after effect of pimples. There are two types of acne scars.

2.  Pigmented Scars – are purplish or brown in color. There are more common in those with dark skin. Pigment cells collect in the blemish during the process.

3.  Ice Pick Scars – are small depressions in the skin.

Picking a pimple can lead to bacteria getting into the skin and cause an infection, which ultimately results in a scar. A scar does not have to be permanent if treated quickly and properly.
