The Itchy Details
Do you think you have atopic dermatitis? Sometimes doctors have a tough time diagnosing this disease because the symptoms can look like many other diseases and conditions. Here is what AD usually looks like.
  • Intensely itchy skin that leads to rashes.
  • Inflamed, red, scaly, bumpy, crusty, or oozing rashes.
  • Rashes on the face, neck, feet, hands, inside elbows, backs of knees.
  • History of asthma or hay fever in family (or in patient).
  • History of eczema in the family.
  • Chronic symptoms.
  • Symptoms usually start before age 5.
  • Darker or thicker skin.
Do you think you have atopic dermatitis (the most common form of eczema)? Up to 20% of infants and children have symptoms at some point. Check off the boxes that describe you:
You have itchy and dry skin that turns into rashes
Your rashes are on your face, neck, hands, feet, or the insides of your elbows and knees
Sometimes you can't fall asleep because you itch so badly
You have asthma or hay fever (or someone in your family does)
The symptoms are chronic (as in, your rashes come back)
Certain detergents or foods, or strong emotions, make you itch more
The symptoms started before you were five years old
