Everyone has different amounts of those melanocytes in their skin, which is why one person may tan slowly and deeply while another will simply burn. Genetics is mostly what determines your skin type.
The sun is not completely our enemy. It provides us with Vitamin D which we need to stay healthy. More and more studies are also showing that sunlight boosts moods and energy levels. The problem begins when we let our skin be exposed to the sun for long amounts of time.
Too much unprotected sun exposure can result in:
Spots and discoloration on the skin (especially the hands and chest)
Wrinkles- damage to the collagen in your skin, which causes a loss of elasticity (tightness)
Skin cancer (from UV rays)
Hardening and thickening of the top layer of skin
Sunburns - OUCH!
Medications: Even people who are vigilant about making sure they don’t mix their medications in a dangerous way often forget that many medications react badly with the sun. Acne treatments, birth control pills and many other prescriptions can cause your skin to be extra susceptible to the sun’s rays.
