First aid courses are often taught at school or you can visit your local Red Cross to be certified in first aid and CPR. In the event of an emergency, it's wise to keep a list of emergency numbers (local police, ambulance, fire station, poison control), crisis hotlines and contact information for family, friends, and neighbors. It is incredibly important to learn what to do in any given situation so that you can act quickly and accurately and lessen your risk of danger.
If an adult is around, ALWAYS alert them to the situation. If you find yourself alone, try not to panic. Immediately dial 911 or the appropriate emergency phone number and follow their instructions. Call your parents next and wait for an adult to arrive. Emergency situations can be scary but if you and your family educate yourselves together on how to respond appropriately, you can feel less anxious or frightened in a crisis.
