Symptoms of Night Eating Syndrome
Do you find that you eat most of your meals at night, and sometimes get up and eat after you have gone to bed?  These are some of the symptoms of NES.  Read on to find out more.
  • Lack of or decreased appetite during the day
  • Insomnia
  • Increased appetite at night
  • Increased eating in the evening (hyper-phagia) and often gets up after going to bed to eat more (nocturnal eating)
  • Feeling tense, anxious, worried, or guilty while eating
  • Tendency to eat foods with sugars and starchy foods (heavy in carbohydrates)
  • Night Eating Syndrome is likely underreported due to the minimal research available. It has yet to be accepted into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. This manual offers the criteria by which disorders are diagnosed. However, if you or someone you know exhibits the following warning signs, night eating syndrome could be the cause. Don't worry, although this deviant eating pattern is new to the public, doctors are finding their advice to be helpful for night eaters. Check all that apply to you, below:
    Consume 50% of more of your caloric intake at night
    Have no appetite for breakfast; delay eating for a while after you awake
    Have trouble falling asleep and difficulty staying asleep through the night
    Frequently wake up at night and eat
    Foods you choose are mostly carbohydrates
    Feel guilty about the amount of food you ate the prior evening
    Often feel tense, anxious, worried or guilty while eating
    Experience anxiety, nervousness, guilt and agitation (esp. at night)
