Aaahhh-cchhooo!!
Millions of Americans suffer from allergies, some more severe than others. You are by no means alone. There are ways to avoid letting allergies keep you from what you love to do.

Reviewed by Dr. Frank Twarog

Allergies happen when something that your immune system can't handle comes into contact with your body. Your immune system is supposed to protect you so when it considers a substance to be an invader, the body alerts you to a sensitivity to that substance. It reacts in an unusual way as a result of trying to rid itself of the unwelcome “guest”.

Allergies to food, dust, plant pollen, or medication are the most common. Some responses to allergens can be mild while others are severe and at times fatal. Nearly 50 million Americans have to deal with allergies either all year-round or during particular seasons. Your sibling could be allergic to pet dander and therefore not able to get the dog she wants, while you beg your parents everyday for that cute little gold retriever you saw in the pet store window. But intense allergic reactions can place your health in danger so it’s best not to subject yourself or anyone with an allergy to whatever might trigger that response.

Both you and your parents need to be aware of what causes the allergies and how to best prevent or avoid coming into contact with those substances. You are likely to develop allergies if one or both parents are allergic to something. Steps to keep away from allergens should be taken as early as infancy. Find out where to get the best information and how to cope with allergies while still enjoying the activities you love. Remember, you are not alone!
