What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases?

The following diseases are most accurately defined by their symptoms because that is what makes each one a unique STD. Another defining characteristic is whether or not they can be cured.

A sexually transmitted disease, or STD, can be transmitted through any type of bodily fluid, including blood, semen and vaginal discharge. There are several different types of STDs. Some are curable infections and others are incurable viruses.
The following is a list of some commonly contracted STDs that will be discussed on this page:

Bacterial Infections (usually curable with antibiotic)

Chlamydia (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease)
Gonorrhea (PID)
Trichomoniasis
Pubic Lice (Crabs)
Scabies
Syphilis
Yeast Infection

Viral Infections (no known cures, medications to treat symptoms)

Genital Warts
Hepatitis-B (HBV)
Genital Herpes (HSV-2)
AIDS/HIV

Women under the age of 25 are at the highest risk for contracting STD’s.

Condoms are the most reliable protection against STD’s (aside from abstinence). Latex condoms are the most reliable. Polyurethane and natural fiber condoms have tiny pores that allow for some STD’s such as the HIV virus, to be passed. Be aware that any condom, no matter what type or brand, can break. (About 1-5% of the time condoms do not prevent pregnancy or STD’s.)

In females, the most common symptoms of an STD are internal – meaning that a woman may be infected without knowing it. How do you know if you have an STD? GET TESTED!
