Sometimes puberty can feel just like that. One moment you’re a comfortable kid and the next you are beginning to look dangerously like an adult- broad shoulders or wide hips and all. What is going on here?
A child’s body and an adult’s body are very different. A teen’s body is the link between them. Although the change may seem very sudden to you, it really is a process that starts somewhere around 8-10 years old. Over the years your body has been taking on a different size, shape and feel. Your skin may get greasier, hair will grow in all sorts of places and your body will start to do things that you have no control over. Hormones that you can’t even see or feel will be changing the inside of your body around as well. It can feel awkward and embarrassing; except for the fact that you know everyone else has to go through the same thing!
Another consequence of puberty is that your emotions may go crazy. Sometimes it may feel like you can’t help the way you are reacting even when you know you are going a little overboard- whether it be screaming at your parents or crying about a class. Even if you don’t completely understand them, never keep these intense emotions locked up. Talk to others about how you are feeling and find ways to let loose your frustration.
Your body is making the changes necessary for you to become a mature adult. Let nature take its course as you grow and change. Your habits and ways of thinking may have to go through a change as well, but your body can’t take care of that, you will! Take the time to learn how to care for your new body; keep it healthy and protect it from harm.
