Many people ignore politics until they are old enough to vote, then when they turn 18 they have no idea who or what to vote for. If you take the time to become informed and figure out what you believe in, when you do get to step into that voting booth, the decisions you make will mean much more.
For years, adults have labeled teens as “apathetic” when it comes to politics- saying that they don’t seem to care. However, recently there seems to be a surge of teen involvement in politics. The policies and laws that are being passed now effect teens just as much as adults. Some are even poised to have their greatest impact years down the road when today’s teens are adults.
“Politics” is a broad term to throw around. Politics is more than just voting for the president. It’s possible that you are politically involved and you don’t even realize it. Have you ever protested a school policy that you thought was unfair? Have you ever been involved in or watched a debate in school? Have you ever participated in a local environmental event? Have you ever argued with your parents over something you saw on the news?
The most important part of getting involved is to become informed and find the causes that you care most about. Before you declare yourself a Republican or Democrat, find out what those terms mean. Maybe you don’t fit into either category. Find those issues that you are passionate about. The issues being debated in the government have real-life consequences for everyone in the country. Which issues will affect you? Which ones will affect people you love?
There’s no reason to stay silent. SPEAK UP and SPEAK LOUD till people take notice. Be a leader to your peers and show that being politically aware is not only important, but it’s cool.
