What is Rape?
Each state has its own legal definitions for rape and sexual assault, so legally it depends on where you live.  Here are the more general definitions that most people work with:

Rape:
Rape is forced sexual intercourse of any kind including vaginal, anal or oral; heterosexual or homosexual; penetration with foreign objects. If you have not consented to the sexual activity, it is rape. A rapist may be a stranger, but statistically, they are more likely to be someone you know including a boyfriend/girlfriend or spouse. In some states, if you are legally intoxicated (your blood alcohol level is above a certain level) or your judgment is impaired by drugs, and you have intercourse it can be considered rape.

Sexual Assault:
Completed or attempted attacks generally involving unwanted sexual contact between the victim and offender. Sexual assaults may or may not involve force and include such things as grabbing or fondling. Sexual assault also includes verbal threats.

Quick Facts
  • One out of every six American women have been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime

  • A survey of men in prison for rape showed that only 2% were armed at the time because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years.

  • 93% of juvenile sexual assault victims knew their attacker
