Habitat for Humanity is an organization which builds houses for families in need. Groups and individuals can volunteer to help with the efforts, provide materials or even their professional skills. Their website is easy to navigate through (with a special place to go if you’re “new to habitat” which will explain everything). You can use it to find local branches, apply for a habitat home, find projects to work on or other ways to get involved.
This is a list of famous people who experienced homelessness at some point during their lives. It’s inspiring to see Nobel prize winners, Oscar winners, and best-selling authors all of whom have managed to defeat the cycle of poverty and homelessness.
Horizons for Homeless Children is a Massachusetts agency that tries to ensure that homeless children are given every advantage that they can get so that they can live up to their full potential. The information on the site is very good no matter where you live.
This is a very good site with directories of local homeless agencies, papers and studies on homelessness and poverty, information if you are homeless, information if you want to help as well as many publications and facts. It has a directory of homeless shelters all across the country as well as many personal accounts describing times of homelessness. It’s easy to navigate but a lot of the information is in research and study form which can be a little dense to read.
This site has really good, straight-forward information including an extensive section on how you can get involved. Also has fact sheets to print out, news updates, policy background, stats and figures. The articles can get very technical, however
This site has great news updates and current information surrounding these issues. It is, obviously, focused on policy and law but has a big emphasis on how everyone can get involved. It’s easy to navigate though some of the reports get a little technical
Though this site is focused on one particular aspect of preventing poverty (the Universal Living Wage campaign), the information is very interesting and easily lain out. The “Myths” section and the “Sample Cities” sections are particularly good
