The World At Your Fingertips
You’ve heard from your friends who’ve studied abroad that it was awesome, but they went to Paris, London, and Tokyo.  You can’t study in all three, but you really want to since they loved it so much.  If they all were so cool, how do you know which one you’ll like the best?

Study abroad is a pretty standard option in most college curriculums and something that every student who is interested in traveling to another country should take advantage of.  You can study in a number of different places, some that speak English and some that don’t.  You’ll hear returning students tell their stories and say what an awesome time they had in whatever country they were visited.  But if they all were so cool which one is the best for you?

This is a big commitment.  It’s not like going to a friend’s house when you can come home whenever you want to.  Studying abroad is a semester or year long stay in a different country; not something everyone is up for.  Sometimes students with two majors aren’t allowed to go or they won’t graduate on time.  It’s all right if you have no interest in going abroad or are unable to; it’s not for everyone.  But if you do, make sure you’re up for the challenge.

There’s a lot to look into before you study abroad.  You have to decide what country you want to live in, which will vary depending on your interests.  You need to find out which academic program involved fits in with your major.  What type of setting would you prefer, rural or urban, and before you answer any of these questions, you have to think about if you can afford to study abroad.  If not, there are scholarships and finance options available, but you have to be prepared, so plan early.

Studying abroad is not something you can just decide one day to sign up for, and then expect to have an amazing time.  It requires a lot of thought as to what you want from the experience and an application process which will determine whether or not you are accepted into that program.  You need to get a passport, exchange your money, and learn what to do in an emergency situation overseas.

If you think you want to study abroad then go for it!  Just make sure you do the necessary research into the countries and programs first so that you know what to look forward to  This could be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life if you do it right.  So if you want to go overseas for a while to see what life is like in other places, then start researching now!
