Whenever you go out to eat, you always have a server (the neutral term for waiter or waitress). And you decide how much of a tip he gets depending on the service he provides. Few of us stop to think about what it must be like to be in his shoes, and what really goes into being a waiter. It’s a lot more difficult than it seems from the table. Being a waiter takes a lot of skill and dedication to each customer’s happiness.
If you’re looking for a job where you get to meet new people everyday, then food service is the place for you. The world of waitressing is fast-paced and never ending. There’s always a customer to serve and food to bring to the table. There are specials to memorize on top of the regular menu. You make friends with your fellow waiters; you can come back to the kitchen to complain to them about annoying customers.
If you want a job that keeps odd hours, is always busy, and lets you meet people while making good money, then this is for you. It does require being on your feet for hours at a time (comfortable shoes are must), and dealing with the obnoxious customers every now and again, but with the tips burning a hole in your pocket, you probably won’t complain. Nobody said it was easy.
So if a 9-5 desk job sounds like a snooze-fest to you, then look into the wonderful world of food service. You’ll probably learn some things you never knew before, you’ll be able to improve upon the skills you already possess, and you’ll definitely never look at those who wait on you the same way again.
